Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is using the Data Domain DD580 and the DD690. The INI Group interviewed Michael Passe, storage architect. This is how Michael describes his role:

“My role within the company is storage architect, which means I'm in the planning and the over-the-horizon view of what we're going to do in storage.  So what are our new platforms going to be?  What new technologies are we going to employ to provide service to our customer base over the next two to three years?  I've been with the company for going on eleven plus years now.”

The following is an overview of Beth Israel’s IT environment:

  • Approximately eighteen thousand employees. 
  •  IT budget on average it's eight or ten million annually for IT for capital. 
  • Environment consists of approximately three hundred fifty servers, virtual and physical. 
  • Operating systems include Windows 2000 through 2008, Red Hat Enterprise, Linux 2.1   through 5, and HP UX. 
  • Using both VMware and Xen for virtualization platforms. 
  • Existing backup environment is Data Domain DD580 and Data Domain DD690.
  • Symantec NetBackup 6.52.
  • Business critical applications protected by Data Domain are PeopleSoft Financials and  
  • PeopleSoft Human Resources systems, various Oracle databases, homegrown applications   running on Oracle, Critical Care clinical system for patient support and data integration engine
