Voice of the Customer

Oxford University is using the HP Lefthand VMware VSA. The INI Group interviewed Jon Hutchings, senior systems engineer.

This is how Jon describes his role:

"I work for a team within the computing service and I'm one of a number of senior systems engineers within that team and the team provides solutions and services to other departments of colleges on a charge back basis so we're a little unique within the university in that we do things for real money rather than paper money that gets pushed around between one pot and another. I've been with the university now for thirteen years and I now head up a group within the team which looks after virtual infrastructure and some other Linux based services on a day to day basis. In reality this means I do Linux and VMware ESX management."

The following is an overview of the Oxford University:

  • Fourteen VMware ESX server
  • Twenty-two terabytes of storage
  • Six hundred physical systems
  • AIX, Solaris, Linux, Windows and Mac OS 10
  • Thirty-eight colleges
  • Five academic divisions
  • One hundred fifty employees in computing service department
